Sipchem to establish an 80 million SR polymer center at Dhahran Techno Valley

11/10/2009 01:58:00 ă

The Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, and Saudi International Petrochemical Company (Sipchem) announced plans to establish a research center for the development of polymer technologies and applications.  An accord in this regard was signed October 4, 2009 at KFUPM.

According to a memorandum of understanding, Sipchem will build the center at the Dhahran Techno-Valley at KFUPM on an area of 15,000 square meters at a cost of SR80 million. Sipchem will also be responsible for the center’s management and operation. The land agreement for the center has already been signed by Sipchem and KFUPM.

The center will be a nucleus for future expansion and create new communication channels between Saudi universities and the industrial sector.

The center is expected to be operational by 2012. It will have a particular emphasis on films used in manufacturing solar cells, thin agricultural films, flexible pipe, adhesives, power and communication cables including fiber optics and any other products that support the national program for the development of industrial complexes. The center will also increase cooperation in research through the use of laboratories, equipment and the exchange of expertise between the university and Sipchem.

Sipchem CEO Eng. Ahmad Al-Ohali said the company would continue its efforts and active contributions for the application of modern technologies and research.

H.E. Dr. Khaled S. Al-Sultan said the center was an example of the enhanced relationship and cooperation between the university and the industrial sector. He also underlined the role of the Dhahran Techno-Valley in the encouragement of creative thinking with participation of major companies that contribute to the application of technology in the petroleum, gas, water and information technology. He said the relationship was positive for both parties and sets a solid basis for an active, creative and compatible application of the latest technologies. “These joint efforts will bring the industrial sector closer to the university,” Dr. Al-Sultan added.
